Social Media Engagement Flopping? Are we all Tired of Engaging?

Social media management that starts conversations

Staying positive and consistent when your social media engagement is down

Traditional engagement metrics like likes and comments are falling flat—Facebook interactions are down 80%, TikTok engagement has halved, and Instagram’s average engagement rate is a mere 0.43%. Yet, this doesn’t mean your audience isn’t watching; it just means they’re consuming content differently.

How many times have you thought no one was paying attention to your social media posts, only to discover later that they’d been silently watching all along? More and more, audiences are shifting from active engagement to passive consumption. For example, 67% of TikTok users never post at all, and a staggering 92% of interactions are passive views. On platforms like Pinterest, silent inspiration is so influential that it drives 89% of purchase decisions. Even Instagram now prioritises view sends over traditional likes and comments.

With competition at an all-time high and consumers evolving their habits, it’s time to ask: Are we over-engaging? Social media managers are feeling burnt out trying to spark forced conversations when real engagement now comes from quality, authentic interactions.

Here are some actionable tips:

  1. Rethink Your KPIs: Focus on metrics that reflect genuine customer interest, such as view sends, saves, and meaningful DMs, rather than just likes and comments.
  2. Embrace User Generated Content (UGC) as a Core Strategy:
UGC is content created by your customers—it’s like having real-life influencers sharing authentic photos, reviews, and testimonials about your brand. UGC comes in two forms: organic (naturally shared by customers) and paid (commissioned from professional creators). This blend of genuine, influencer-like content builds powerful social proof, instils trust, and sets the stage for more personalised engagement.
  1. Engage: Interaction is key. Respond to comments, participate in conversations, and build a community through DMs and group chats. Also, support other businesses in your niche—the more you engage, the more likely they are to support you in return.
  2. Get Creative: Don’t just rely on traditional metrics. Use interactive Story features, polls, and live sessions to spark genuine conversations and drive quality engagement.

Don’t Get Discouraged by Low Engagement

The way audiences consume content is evolving. Traditional engagement metrics may be declining, but that doesn’t mean your efforts are wasted. Remember, just because people aren’t commenting, liking, or sharing doesn’t mean they aren’t seeing your content. Many clients have told me they’ve been quietly following my posts for months—or even years—before reaching out. Your silent audience is observing, learning, and evaluating. Consistency pays off; the more regularly you show up and share valuable insights, the more you’re seen as a trusted professional.

At Marketing Pace, we’re dedicated to helping brands re-think their social media strategy and connect with their audiences in meaningful ways. If you’re based in Chislehurst, Bromley, or South East London and need support with your engagement strategy, reach out.
